I needed something else to do while I’m still looking for a full-time job, so I’m grabbing some news items and occasionally writing about fun stuff I saw/did/like/etc. over on
The Drive
.
Expect some of the fun stuff I did over the summer to show up pretty soon.

Congrats! Keep us posted on how it goes. Two or three of my RFD guys have contributed over there.

But that’s not your face.
Honestly, I'm pulling for you to keep making a go of automotive journalism. I like your writing.

Aww, thanks. I really need to find another full-time opening ASAP, though, but it’s nice to show up in some fun places along the way. I do
like where
The Drive’s
headed at the moment and they seem to have their heads in the right place.

Would you relocate, or do you think you an stay where you are and just travel as needed?
![]() 12/03/2018 at 22:06 |

I’m open to relocation so long as my quality of life stays sort of the same (or improves). Heck, it might even be time to go back to a desk job where I see real, live humans
in person
who aren’t just handing me my usual order at the coffee shop.
But it’s got to be in a place where I can wander off and mess around on a race track relatively easily (I mean, why do you think I have a job? paying rent is a bonus). All three cars should come with me, and if there’s snow, all three of those suckers need to live inside. Preferably somewhere with an active, friendly parsh club to talk broken 944s with.
Also, I need to be somewhere it’s easy to fly out in case something happens with Mom.

Fortunately in the internet age, there are more places to make that happen. You don’t have to live on the coasts anymore.

I wish that was the case. Auto stuff is way too concentrated in three cities, which leads to the rest of the country frustratingly going ignored. Hell, I feel easy to forget about in Austin because hardly no one’s here, and that blows.
I’ve talked to a couple places that wanted a move for some reason or another (usually a preferred way of working or for video availability), so yeah: That’s a thing!

You don’t have a YouTube channel, do you? Because you could. You certainly have the content for it. If Freddy, Doug, and Mr. Regular can make a living on it, you sure could make a go of Parshalump Productions ™ .

I do but it’s random clips of stuff, it’d probably be just me, and I hate hate
haaaaaate
video editing. I have a film degree, even! I know exactly how much I hate to edit video.
(I also have
concerns about the ever-changing way in which YouTube throws a bone to its creators and doubts about their long-term willingness to do so at a viable rate, but I do think video’s fun if you can make it work...and someone who likes editing takes over that part.)
![]() 12/04/2018 at 18:41 |

Some stuff has hardly any editing at all, it seems. Although I don’t go for that format, some people get a lot of clicks. I think the important thing is your content and not just being some narcissistic jerk. One of my daughter’s favorite channels used to be these young girls filming stuff like their family vacations, etc., with their parents helping to edit and post. The great advantage you have is you already know people who have had success and will help you.
Honestly, the daunting thing I see is putting in the time. Everyone I’ve seen who makes decent money at it puts in the hours. But I’ve also seen that people who have even moderate success in car-tubing start to get access to press cars, invitations to events, and paths to more stable car journalism in some cases.
![]() 12/04/2018 at 21:31 |
|
Yeah, but...when you’ve previously had a more stable job and can get decent freelance rates for your work, the hours of work to do car-tube on your own (for no pay until you hit YouTube’s magic number) isn’t really worth it. If I had unlimited time and money hoarded away so I could spend more time on things or other people who could split the duties with me
, maybe. I still hate video editing! But working for free until I’d hit the minimum numbers YouTube wants isn’t something I can afford to do right now.

Good point. Rent must be paid.

A couple of friends and I just started a new website (about, erm, not cars) and it’s surprisingly much easier than what I thougth it’d be.
Perhaps with your contacts and expertise you could open up a new site atop writting for The Drive?
![]() 12/06/2018 at 15:22 |

Big problem with that one: websites do cost a little to get going (for
hosting, a domain, etc., etc.). On top of that, I firmly believe that people should be paid fairly for their labor, especially if it was
of the quality I’d actually want to read in a car site. I do not have money.
![]() 12/06/2018 at 16:04 |

I agree with you that labour should be paid back fairly (and some sites have proven to be, erm, exploitative of journos)

Good to hear
you have something to help pass the time. I think you just need to become an Automotive Instagram influencer, sell fuel sharks and premium
blinker fluid.
